Sherwood Forest is in East Baton Rouge, around Sherwood Forest Boulevard. Many homes here are older houses in established subdivisions.

Fences you share with neighbors

Many backyards in these established subdivisions share fence lines with neighbors on two or three sides.

When a backyard fence is shared on more than one side, replacing it is partly a conversation with the people next door. A few things to talk through before the quote:

  • Whether the neighbor knows the fence is being replaced, and when.
  • Whether they want to share the cost of the section on their line — that is between you.
  • Which way the finished side of the boards will face.
  • How pets on both sides will be kept in while the old fence is down.

Settling those early keeps installation day simple. If the finished-side question is a sticking point, a board-on-board style looks the same from both yards.

Wood or vinyl for the replacement

For a 150-foot backyard, the published ranges work out to about $2,250 to $4,500 in wood privacy and $3,000 to $6,450 in vinyl, before gates and removal. Wood starts lower and offers more styles; vinyl does not need staining or painting. If you are replacing an old wood fence and are tired of refinishing it, ask for both on the same quote and compare.

Removing the old fence

On a replacement, the old fence is part of the job. Ask whether removal includes pulling the old posts and any concrete around them, whether haul-off is included, and how long the yard will be open between tear-down and the new fence going up. If a neighbor has a dog, that last answer matters to them as much as to you.

Gates on an established lot

A replacement is the easiest time to fix a gate that never worked well. If the old gate sags, sits in the wrong spot, or is too narrow for the mower, say so — the new one can move, widen, or become a double gate. Ask how each gate will be braced so it stays square, and what hinges and latch are included. A gate on a shared line is worth mentioning to the neighbor as well, if it opens toward their side.

Timing the work

Between tear-down and the new fence going up, the yard is open. Ask the installer how long that gap will be, and plan for pets on both sides of a shared line. If you have a preferred week, mention it when you call so the visit and the quote can be scheduled around it.

What the quote should list

  1. 1Footage & layoutTotal linear feet, fence height, and where the line runs — drawn or described so you can check it.
  2. 2Old-fence removal & haul-offTaking down and hauling away the existing fence, priced on its own line — or stated as not included.
  3. 3Materials & postsFence material and style, post type and spacing, and how posts are set.
  4. 4Gates & hardwareEach gate's width and type, plus hinges, latches, and any hardware upgrades.

If you are splitting the cost of a shared section with a neighbor, ask the installer to price that section on its own line too, so the split is easy to work out.

Permits. Baton Rouge is in East Baton Rouge Parish. Ask your installer who pulls the permit.
